Affordable Packet Analyzer MacOSX

I'm currently fiddling with network programming and found that a packet analyzer can come in very handy. Unfortunately the one's I've found are just too expensive for my liking. Can anoybody recommend any certain product that does not go above $50? I've been using Frameseer, but I'm not entirely happy with it. I'm not inclined to install X11 and I certainly don't want to dish out $$$$ for etherpeek and co.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Ole.

What do you want it to do specifically?

This is pretty painless, and it gives you access to a nice piece of
opensource freeware called ethereal. Whether or not this is
sufficient for your needs, I don't know. Depends what you need this
tool to do.

I wrote a better one myself some years ago but it requires lisp and
clim...

All I need is a little TCP/IP Header decoding and display of the TCP (or UDP) contents... nothing much really. Etheral served me fine on a PC until I switched to the Mac 2 Months ago.

Yes Ethereal is great, but I just don't feel comfortable with the tough of installing X11. It might be because I've been working with Linux for so long and I wanted something friendlier when I got my Mac :-) Just call it superstition - it will surely change in the future, but I'm not quite ready.

Any other ideas what I might use for this simple task?

X11 is pretty painless - downoad Apple's version, or if you're
installing Panther, go to custom install and select X11.

If you really don't want to install X11 (honestly, it is like
installing any other application. Actually installing ethereal would
probably be the harder part), then check out MacSniffer or Sniffles.
Both are wrappers around tcpdump and do a decent, if simple, job.
